Creating Your First Collection in Quixli

Collections are the backbone of organized content in Quixli. They let you group related pages together into a single, navigable unit — perfect for building product documentation, course materials, onboarding guides, or any body of work that benefits from structured navigation. Think of a collection as a book, and your pages as its chapters.

This guide walks you through creating your first collection from scratch, adding pages, and configuring settings so your content is ready to share with the world.

Step-by-Step: Create a New Collection

Creating a collection takes less than a minute. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Dashboard: Navigate to your Quixli dashboard by clicking the Quixli logo or visiting your workspace home page

  1. Click "+ New Collection": You'll find this button in the top-right corner of the dashboard, next to the "+ New Page" button

  1. Name Your Collection: Choose a clear, descriptive name that tells readers what to expect — for example, "Product Documentation" or "Engineering Onboarding"

  1. Add a Description: Write a brief summary explaining the purpose and scope of this collection. This appears on the collection's landing page and helps visitors understand what they'll find inside

  1. Choose an Icon: Select an emoji or upload a custom image to give your collection a visual identity. This icon appears in your dashboard sidebar for quick recognition

  1. Set Visibility: Decide who can access this collection — keep it private for now, or set it to public if you're ready to share. You can always change this later

  1. Click "Create Collection": Your new collection is ready. You'll be taken to the collection editor where you can start adding pages

Adding Pages to Your Collection

An empty collection is just a shell — the real value comes from the pages you put inside. Quixli offers several ways to populate your collection:

  • Create a new page directly: Inside the collection view, click "+ Add Page" to create a fresh page that automatically belongs to this collection

  • Drag and drop existing pages: From your dashboard, drag any standalone page into the collection in the sidebar. The page will be moved into the collection while preserving all its content and history

  • Use the page menu: Open any page, click the three-dot menu (⋯), and select "Add to Collection." You'll be prompted to choose which collection to add it to

  • Import from another collection: If you're reorganizing, you can move pages between collections using drag and drop in the sidebar

Pro Tip: When you create a page inside a collection, it inherits the collection's sharing settings. This means if the collection is public, the page will automatically be visible to anyone with the collection link.

Configuring Collection Settings

After creating your collection, you can fine-tune its appearance and behavior from the collection settings page. Click the gear icon next to the collection name to access these options:

  • Name & Description: Update your collection's title and summary at any time. Changes are reflected immediately across all views

  • Icon & Cover Image: Add a cover banner image for a polished, professional look. The cover image appears at the top of the collection's landing page

  • Visibility: Toggle between private, shared (specific people), or public access. Private collections are visible only to you

  • Page Order: Choose how pages are sorted — manually (drag to reorder), alphabetically, or by creation date. Manual ordering gives you the most control over the reading experience

  • Custom Domain: On Pro plans, you can assign a custom subdomain to your collection for branded documentation

Best Practices for Collection Structure

A well-structured collection makes content easy to find and pleasant to read. Here are some guidelines:

  • Start with an overview page: Create a "Welcome" or "Getting Started" page as the first item in your collection to orient readers

  • Use consistent naming: Keep page titles clear and parallel in structure — for example, "Installing the SDK," "Configuring the SDK," "Using the SDK"

  • Group related topics: If your collection covers multiple areas, organize pages so that related topics appear together

  • Keep it focused: A collection should cover one topic area. If you find yourself adding unrelated pages, consider creating a separate collection

  • Add a table of contents: For larger collections, create a dedicated index page that links to key sections

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add the same page to multiple collections?

Currently, each page belongs to one collection at a time. If you need the same content in multiple places, consider creating a page with links to the shared content, or duplicate the page using the page menu.

Is there a limit to how many pages a collection can have?

There's no hard limit on pages per collection. However, for the best reader experience, we recommend keeping collections under 50 pages. For larger bodies of work, consider splitting into multiple collections organized by subtopic.

Can I nest collections inside other collections?

Quixli doesn't support nested collections directly, but you can create a "hub" page within a collection that links to other collections, effectively creating a multi-level navigation structure.
