Upload and File Issues
Quixli supports uploading images, videos, documents, and other files to enrich your pages. Occasionally, uploads may fail or files may not display correctly. This guide covers the most common file-related problems and their solutions.
File Won't Upload
If an upload fails or hangs, work through these checks:
Check File Size Limits
Quixli enforces file size limits to ensure fast loading and reliable storage:
- Images: Maximum 10MB per file. Most photos are well under this limit, but high-resolution RAW or uncompressed PNG files may exceed it
- Videos: Maximum 100MB per file. For longer videos, consider hosting on YouTube or Vimeo and embedding instead
- Documents: Maximum 25MB per file for PDFs and other document types
- Total storage: Check your plan's storage quota in Settings > Billing. Free plans include 100MB; Pro plans include 5GB; Team plans include 25GB
If your file exceeds these limits, compress it before uploading. For images, tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh can reduce file size by 50-80% without visible quality loss.
Verify File Format
Not all file formats are supported. Quixli accepts:
- Images: JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, SVG
- Videos: MP4, WebM
- Documents: PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX
- Other: ZIP, TXT, CSV
If your file format isn't listed, convert it to a supported format before uploading. For example, HEIC photos from iPhones can be converted to JPEG using built-in tools on macOS or free online converters.
Network and Browser Issues
- Check your internet connection: Upload failures often stem from unstable connections. Try uploading on a different network (Wi-Fi vs. cellular) to confirm
- Try a different browser: Browser-specific issues can cause upload failures. If Chrome isn't working, try Firefox or Safari
- Disable browser extensions: Ad blockers and security extensions sometimes block file upload requests. Try uploading in an incognito window
- Check for corporate firewall restrictions: Some corporate networks block file uploads to external services. Try uploading from a personal network if you suspect this
Image Not Displaying
If you've uploaded an image but it appears as a broken image icon or blank space:
- Wait for processing: Large images may take a few seconds to process and generate thumbnails. Wait 10 seconds and refresh the page
- Check the image URL: Right-click the broken image, select "Open image in new tab." If the URL returns a 404 error, the image file may have been deleted or failed to save properly. Re-upload the image
- Re-upload the image: Delete the broken image block and upload the file again. If it fails repeatedly, the original file may be corrupted — try with a different copy
- Check storage quota: If you've exceeded your plan's storage limit, new uploads may fail silently. Check your storage usage in Settings > Billing
Video Not Playing
Video issues are typically caused by format incompatibility or embedding problems:
Uploaded Videos
- Verify the format: Quixli supports MP4 (H.264 codec) and WebM. Other formats (AVI, MOV, MKV) must be converted before uploading. Use HandBrake or CloudConvert for free conversion
- Check file integrity: If the video is corrupted, it may upload but fail to play. Try playing the file locally on your computer first — if it doesn't play locally, the file is damaged
- Allow processing time: Large videos may need time to process. Wait a minute and refresh the page
Embedded Videos (YouTube, Vimeo)
- Check the embed URL: Make sure you're using the correct URL format. For YouTube, use the full video URL (e.g.,
youtube.com/watch?v=...) — Quixli automatically converts it to an embed
- Check video privacy settings: If the source video is set to "Private" on YouTube or Vimeo, the embed won't work. The video must be "Public" or "Unlisted" to embed
- Check for geographic restrictions: Some videos are restricted to specific countries. If the video works for you but not for others, geographic restrictions may be the cause
Storage Quota Management
If you're running low on storage, here's how to free up space:
- Check storage usage: Go to Settings > Billing to see your current storage usage and limit
- Identify large files: Look through your pages for large images and videos. High-resolution images and uncompressed media are usually the biggest space consumers
- Compress images: Download large images, compress them using TinyPNG or similar tools, and re-upload the optimized versions. This often reduces storage by 50% or more
- Remove unused files: Delete images and media that are no longer used in any page. Note that deleting a media block from a page doesn't automatically delete the file from storage — visit Settings > Storage to manage files directly
- Upgrade your plan: If you consistently need more storage, upgrading to a higher plan is often more practical than constantly optimizing files
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upload files larger than the limit by splitting them?
No. Each individual file must be within the size limit. For large datasets or media collections, consider using a dedicated file hosting service (Google Drive, Dropbox) and linking to the files from your Quixli page.
Are uploaded files backed up?
Yes. All uploaded files are stored redundantly across multiple data centers. File backups are included in Quixli's standard backup process and are retained for the same duration as your page content.
Why does my image quality look worse after uploading?
Quixli does not compress or re-encode your images — they're stored at original quality. If an image appears lower quality, it's likely being displayed at a different size than its native resolution. Check that the original image is high enough resolution for its display size. For full-width images, use at least 1600px width.
Can I upload files via drag-and-drop?
Yes. You can drag files directly from your file manager (Finder, Explorer) onto the editor. Images and videos are inserted as visual blocks at the drop position. PDFs and documents are inserted as downloadable file blocks. You can also drag multiple files at once — they're inserted in the order they were selected.
What image formats does Quixli support?
Quixli supports JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, SVG, and AVIF for images. For videos: MP4, WebM, and MOV. For documents: PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and TXT. Unsupported file types will show an error message during upload. If you need to embed an unsupported format, consider converting it first or hosting it externally and embedding via URL.
