Proposal software

The proposal is where the deal gets decided, and most of that decision is made around the price.

Website redesign for Northwind Traders

Proposal · prepared for Dana Whitfield · 12 March

Investment

Three phases, priced by the day, each with its own subtotal. Discovery comes first, so the design rests on what we find rather than what we assume.

Timeline

Discovery starts the week after signature and runs two weeks; design follows for four, build for six. Launch is a Tuesday, never a Friday.

What it has to do

A proposal has to show what you will do and let a client weigh what it costs against the alternative already in front of them. Priced packages invite a choice between options rather than a negotiation over one number, and terms that hold together as they are revised mean the price and the small print never disagree. A client who comes back to the price a second time is telling you something specific about where the deal stands.

What proposal software owns

Pricing with a subtotal per section

Each phase carries its own subtotal, so a client sees what a piece of the work costs without adding up the whole document themselves.

Priced packages, chosen rather than negotiated

Priced options as cards invite a choice between them instead of a back-and-forth over a single figure.

Terms that renumber themselves

Clauses cross-reference each other, so adding or removing one does not leave a citation pointing at the wrong paragraph.

What a second look at the price means

A reader who returns to the pricing section a day later has a specific reason to — the follow-up worth sending answers that, not a generic check-in.

What tracking shows for this document type

An example — not your document. Sections are the document’s own headings.

Where their attention went

Most of their attention went to “Cover” — 2m 03s of 4m 00s. They came back to “Pricing”.

Time each section spent on screen, counted only while the tab was in front and the reader was active. It shows what was in front of them, not what they read.

How it is built

This page is about what a proposal has to do. For the blocks the editor is built from — see the editor.

Questions

Is this the same as the proposal template?

The template is a starting point — one file with the sections already in place. This page is about what happens once it is sent: pricing a client can choose from, terms that stay consistent as they change, and knowing when they came back to the number.

Can a client choose a package without leaving the document?

Yes. They select one of the priced options, and the choice is recorded, so it is on the record when you follow up.

What happens after they come back to the price?

You see it in the reading activity — which pricing section, and when. That is the moment to follow up, rather than a fixed number of days after sending.
